British Values At The Ferns

British Values Statement

As directed under new Ofsted guidance, September 2014, we at The Ferns Primary Academy take opportunities to actively promote British Values, defined by the government as the following:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Actively promoting also means challenging pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including extremist views. At The Ferns, values of tolerance and respect permeate all areas of school life. This engenders a climate within which pupils feel safe and secure and facilitates the fulfilment of potential. Pupil voice plays an integral part in driving the school forward and school rules at different levels are seen as the foundation upon which this can be achieved.

The following are a selection of activities and external accreditations that are evidence of our commitment to British values.

At The Ferns we are a family with common aims to support each other and have a sense of belonging to the school, the community, the local area, the family of NET schools and we celebrate what it is to be British.

  • Year 6 take part in Aspirations week
  • We have an elected school council
  • The children elect house captains
  • A broad and balanced curriculum that teaches elements of democracy, civic responsibility, rules and laws, the monarchy, equality, values and virtues, environmental awareness and understanding of other faiths
  • Visits to different places of worship
  • Visitors from other faiths
  • We celebrate the wide range of different cultures we have in our school
  • Links with the local mayor and the local MP
  • Positive behaviour policy which encourages tolerance and mutual respect
  • A week long British values celebration in autumn term
  • We use the core values from the international baccalaureate curriculum (reflective thinkers, risk takers, open minded, caring, positive thinking, enterprise)
  • Enterprise drives many aspects of our curriculum
  • Children learn to sing the National Anthem

A group of year 6 children are the Northern Education Trust Enterprise winners and are taking part in the National Enterprise awards in 2016
